Presentation on the Arctic Ocean for the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV) of the Netherlands
On 4 June 2014 Erik Molenaar and Alex Oude Elferink of NILOS gave for the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV) of the Netherlands on the legal regime governing the Arctic Ocean. The presentation among others focused on the establishment of the outer limit of the continental shelf in the central Arctic Ocean, the activities of the Arctic Council and the regulation of shipping, offshore hydrocarbon activities and fisheries.
The presentation was made in the framework of a report on foreign affairs and security matters in the Arctic Ocean which the AIV is currently preparing upon the request of the ministers of foreign affairs and defense. The AIV is an independent body which advises government and parliament on foreign policy, particularly on issues relating to human rights, peace and security, development cooperation and European integration.
