PetScan RassenRadar: breed-related diseases in dogs and cats in focus

The RassenRadar has recently been added to PETscan, a diagnosis registration system for veterinarians developed by the Expertise Centre for Veterinary Genetics at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. In the RassenRadar you鈥檒l find a list of hereditary diseases and disorders of a  particular breed of dog or cat, allowing faster recognition of disease states.

PETscan is linked to the veterinary practice's patient management software system and provides a lot of useful information, now including the RassenRadar. Diagnoses made by veterinarians, and registered by them in PETscan are analyzed at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. This allows researchers to discover trends in the diseases occurring in different breeds more quickly and to provide even better information to veterinarians through the RassenRadar.

How does the PETscan RassenRadar work?

By clicking on a particular breed in PETscan, the veterinarian is presented with a list of diagnoses, with those seen particularly frequently in that breed highlighted. Each diagnosis is immediately accompanied by  information about the disease in question, such as whether a DNA test is available, and links to useful websites and current scientific articles.

The breed predispositions of 60 cat breeds and 100 dog breeds have already been added to the RassenRadar. Researchers of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 regularly add new dog breeds. The system continues to improve as veterinarians register the established diagnoses in PETscan, providing more information on occurrence of diseases in breeds. This way veterinarians in science and practice can help each other share knowledge and arrive at accurate diagnoses together.

Working together towards a future with healthy bred animals

Veterinarians are confronted daily with the negative consequences of harmful traits and hereditary diseases in companion animals. The only option for these animals is to alleviate the suffering. By using PETscan, the veterinarian can actually contribute to prevention. The Expertise Centre Genetics of Companion Animals can provide well-founded advice to veterinarians, breeders and policy makers by studying the information entered in PETscan.

The PETscan RassenRadar was developed with support from partners and donors of Friends of Veterinary Medicine (Vrienden Diergeneeskunde). Thanks to these valuable contributions, we are able to work together to reduce harmful traits and diseases in dogs and cats. As a result, these animals can look forward to a healthier future and an improved well-being. Further research remains necessary, and this project depends entirely on your involvement and support. Please continue our mission and join us in making a difference.
