Peter Luijten appointed vice-dean of the strategic theme Life Sciences in Utrecht
"As vice-dean, I will have the opportunity, privilege and time to work with all the research groups at the Utrecht Science Park to further strengthen the Life Sciences"
The Life Sciences Strategic Theme in Utrecht will have its first ‘vice-dean of Life Sciences’ as of 1 October. A novel position for the strategic theme, which encompasses all life sciences-related research at Utrecht ľϸӰ and the ľϸӰ Medical Center Utrecht. Peter Luijten, presently scientific director for the strategic theme and head of the division Imaging & Oncology at UMC Utrecht, will take up this exciting new position.
Research in the strategic theme Life Sciences converges into four focus areas: Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cells, Personalised Medicine & Health, One Health and Science for Life. In addition, several interdisciplinary hubs connect and strengthen relations between researchers and external partners. The strategic theme fosters innovative solutions to societal challenges and is by nature interdisciplinary. This fits well with Peter Luijten’s background: “Originally trained in physical chemistry, and after many years of being at the forefront of innovation in medical imaging at Philips, my work at UMC Utrecht has its focus on MRI for precision diagnosis and treatment guidance. Only by combining knowledge and expertise from multiple disciplines we can achieve innovations in healthcare that ultimately make patient care more efficient”.
Peter is looking forward to his new role as vice-dean Life Sciences: “We have a wealth of excellent research and innovation at Utrecht Science Park. Not only at UU and UMC Utrecht, but also at the Hubrecht Institute, the Princess Máxima center, the RIVM and various companies at the Science Park. Combined with state-of-the-art infrastructure, we have a great proposition for the outside world. As vice-dean, I will have the opportunity, privilege and time to work with all these groups to further strengthen the Life Sciences at Utrecht Science Park”.
