On human rights in Azerbaijan and Russia
The Utrecht Centre for Global Challenges organised a Masterclass with the Netherlands Helsinki Committee on Thursday 13 September.
The speakers, Andrey Yurov, Rasul Jaranov, and Konstantin Baranov, discussed the difficulty of implementing Human Rights in Russia as well as Azerbaijan. One of the issues raised at the event was the lack of knowledge regarding the situation in Azerbaijan. Although the human rights breaches in Azerbaijan might be worse than in Russia, the situation does not receive the attention of the international community it deserves. This is why, besides spreading awareness amongst the population, the speakers are active in spreading the word on the international stage and shedding a light on the situation using events such as the Eurovision song contest.
The topics raised by the speakers caused for lively discussions amongst the participants who enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and receive expert opinions on the matter.
