New phase for Utrecht Science Park: living, working and studying

Samenwerkingsovereenkomst UU GU

The Utrecht Science Park (USP) is on the eve of a new development phase. Today, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 and the City of Utrecht signed a cooperation agreement outlining their joint ambition: to develop the USP into a lively, future-proof city district with more space for living, working, studying, and meeting.

The agreement marks an important step towards an area with around 4,000 additional homes, a similar number of new jobs and various amenities such as catering, culture and a supermarket. In doing so, both parties aim to contribute to an inclusive, sustainable and attractive living environment for students, employees, residents and visitors.

Alderman Susanne Schilderman: "The plans coming out of this collaboration will do a lot for the liveability of the Science Park. There will be more housing, social facilities and catering. In addition, accessibility will be improved with better cycling routes, and there will be more greenery to make the area more resistant to hot summers."

On behalf of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, College President Prof Anton Pijpers signed the agreement. "With this agreement, we make the next step in our joint responsibility for the Utrecht Science Park. We are building a place where the city and science reinforce each other - in sustainability, in quality of life and in knowledge development," Anton Pijpers said.

Agreements until 2040

The cooperation focuses on the period up to 2040 and is based on the ambitions and objectives of the USP 2040 environmental vision. The agreements in the SOK enable the university and the municipality to further shape the environmental vision in the new environmental plan. Besides housing and employment, there is a focus on climate adaptation, accessibility, and spatial quality. Think about adding greenery and water, improving connections for pedestrians and cyclists, and realising sustainable buildings for education and research.

A concrete example is the redesign of Cambridgelaan into an accessible, green city street. Investments are also being made in the landscape and ecological zones, such as the future Arboretum Park. In this way, USP will increasingly take on the character of an open, urban campus that matches both the university's social role and the growth of the city of Utrecht.
