New greenhouses for the Botanic Gardens
The Botanic Gardens of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 are set to receive a new greenhouse complex. The current greenhouses, which house research facilities and a unique collection of tropical plants, are outdated and no longer meet the requirements of modern research and education. The greenhouses will close on 1 December 2025, and the new complex is expected to open in 2028 at the earliest.
The Botanic Gardens, including the greenhouses, form a living research and teaching site for Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. A new greenhouse complex is essential to continue vital research into biodiversity and other topics, and to preserve the tropical plant collection from Central and South America. The new complex will provide space for even more plant research and will also house the Ecotron facility of the Netherlands Plant Ecophenotyping Centre (). This unique research facility consists of thirty-six separate research units in which researchers can create experimental mini-ecosystems for innovative ecological studies.
鈥淏iodiversity is under pressure worldwide,鈥 says Edwin Pos, Scientific Director of the Botanic Gardens. 鈥淏iodiversity is the foundation of ecosystems and therefore also of the services that nature provides us. We as humans are directly dependent on this. At Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, we are investigating how we can tackle these global problems. The Botanic Gardens, and certainly the greenhouses, play an important role in this as a living research site.鈥
Dismantling and relocation
Preparations will start this autumn: part of the plant collection will be moved to an external location. The greenhouses will close to the public on 1 December 2025. The remaining plants will be moved to external greenhouses, and the butterflies will be housed at owners with a suitable habitat. Dismantling of the greenhouse complex is expected to start in the summer of 2026.
Opening hours
The Botanic Gardens will remain open as usual during the construction work: from 1 March to 1 December, daily from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.
Up-to-date information on the progress of the construction work will be available on the Botanic Gardens website and at Campus development Questions? Contact the project team: herontwikkelingkassencomplex@uu.nl.
