'Americanization' of Italian migrants
During his stay in the United States, Matteo Brera will work on a project titled 'From Outsiders to Southerners: Transnational Experiences and Cultural Hybridization of the Italian Migrants in the American South (1880-1980)'. His research aims to outline a history of the birth, the early development and the socio-cultural transformation(s) of the Italian communities in the southern states. This account will reveal the process of cultural and social hybridization that 鈥楢mericanized鈥 the identity of Italian migrants throughout a century and across the three mayor waves of immigration (circa 1880-1917, 1918-1945 and 1946-1980).
IHRC archives
The IHRC archives preserve sources documenting a broad range of immigrant and refugee experiences, and strive to connect history to today鈥檚 experiences. The IHRC collections are related to displaced persons who emigrated to the USA from central, eastern, and southern Europe; the eastern Mediterranean (formerly called the 鈥淣ear East鈥 region of the Middle East and North Africa); and late-20th and early 21st century immigrants and refugees. The collections vary from print to manuscript to born-digital. They include personal papers as well as organizational records of ethnic and immigrant-formed groups, and of social service providers.
