Hans van Meerten, professor of European Pension Law at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, has received a grant from Instituut Gak for hiring two PhD students and one employee. They will conduct research into consumer protection against pension products.

Dutch New pension system will be more individual

The new retirement system for the Netherlands that the government and societal partners are working on, will be more based on individual choices and savings. The cabinet, employers and unions hope to present a newly developed pension agreement before the summer.
"The protection of consumers against pension products in this new system is a spearhead of the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets and therefore very urgent," says professor Van Meerten. 鈥淭he two PhD students will conduct research into consumer protection for pensions with me as supervisor and Professor Frans Pennings as co-supervisor in the coming years.鈥 Professor Ewoud Hondius, expert in consumer law and now retired from Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, is also involved in this research, as an advisor.

Dutch and European legislation

The two PhD students are An Wouters and Jorik van Zanden, both graduated from Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 and have been active in finance and governance for some time. An Wouters has worked with various pension providers, pension insurers and the Dutch Belastingdienst, for instance on cross-border pension files. Her research focuses on the question whether and how (European) consumer law can provide an assessment framework for pension consumers in the Netherlands.

Jorik van Zanden has worked at the European Parliament, where he worked on the Pan-European Pension Product (PEPP). He also worked for an asset manager.
His doctoral research focuses on the question of how the pension consumer is protected in the work-related and individual "pension pillar" in various countries and which conclusions and recommendations can be derived from this for Dutch and European legislation and regulations.
