Joint call on agricultural crisis of farmers, scientists and Bird Protection Netherlands

Transition to more sustainable and more biodiverse agriculture

In order to prevent us from running from crisis to crisis in the upcoming years, the government must take serious steps towards an agricultural system that does not overburden the capacity of our ecosystem, as it does now. An actual change in agriculture is the only way to solve the problems in a sustainable way.

That is stated in an open letter that Fred Wouters - director of Bird Protection Netherlands - with chairman Alex Datema of the Stichting Boerennatuur and three leading scientists in this field - Kees Bastmeijer (UvT), Hens Runhaar (UU / WUR) and Jan Willem Erisman (director from the Louis Bolk Institute) - sent to Prime Minister Rutte and Minister Schouten. "Many in society, including farmers who feel duped by the measures, recognize that changing the agricultural system is necessary for future-proof agriculture and saving biodiversity," they write on the eve of the debate on the Nitrogen Emergency Act, "that in fact proposes a deterioration in the protection of nature areas."
