Internship at the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Toronto

The Dutch Consulate General in Toronto is looking for assistance from two interns starting September 1st, 2015 for a period of 4-5 months. Focus of the internships will be on agri-food, water management / flood management and landscape architecture. The Netherlands and Ontario work closely together on environmental issues and have signed a 鈥淢emorandum of Understanding鈥, which is instrumental in stimulating cooperation (G2G, B2B and K2K) with Ontario. The Netherlands also has 2 dedicated programs (Partners for International Business or PIB) for sectors Soil, Water and Waste. The interns will play an important role in supporting implementation of various activities resulting from this MOU and PIB鈥檚.

Work environment

Our office is located in downtown Toronto and our team consists of 10 staff-members who are working on economic and trade affairs and on consular matters. The team is regularly supported by several interns from Dutch universities.

Toronto is a bustling place and the third largest city in North America. Toronto is the financial, cultural and economic center of Canada. The Greater Toronto Area has more than 6 million inhabitants and is an important business epicenter hosting many Conferences and Trade shows that are important and relevant for Dutch companies looking to enter Ontario markets. Toronto is home to a large Dutch constituency which is at the center of strong historical and cultural relations between Canada and the Netherlands. This relationship has been highlighted by the recent State visit of Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen M谩xima.

Tasks

Starting September onwards the focus of activities will be mainly around the following themes:

- Agri-food & Horticulture

- Water Management (flood management) /Landscape Architecture

The interns will contribute to research and analysis of best practices, stimulate discussions on innovative approaches and help foster partnerships. The interns will help identify gaps in Canadian knowledge/expertise and help develop strategies to promote Dutch expertise and innovations in specific environmental sectors.

Ad 1)    A recent trade mission from the Netherlands to Ontario (May 2015) reiterated interest for opportunities in Agri-food and Horticulture. Canadians of Dutch heritage and Dutch companies in this sector have played a major role in shaping Canadian agricultural sector. The intern will be working on researching and analyzing business opportunities both in short and long term, as well    as developing and implementing strategies to promote Dutch knowledge, innovations and exports in general. This is a new focus area for our Consulate and therefore the intern鈥檚 role in defining market opportunities and potential is essential.

Ad 2)    The development of Toronto is fast paced and large in scope. The amount of new projects and site developments in the Greater Toronto Area exceeds New York and Chicago combined. Together with the waterfront redevelopment, the opportunities for Dutch expertise are significant. The intern will contribute to research and analysis of business opportunities in Ontario as well as follow-up on leads resulting from the recent Trade mission and Resilient Cities Summit held in Toronto. The intern will further assist in compiling business profiles of Dutch companies interested in business opportunities arising from Waterfront Toronto Redevelopment and Re-naturalization of the Don River. This internship focuses on the specific situation of water in the delta area of Toronto. The intern will assist in putting together a program for high level delegates visiting the Netherlands in September 2015.

Both interns will be working closely together with a senior staff member of the Consulate who will act as your supervisor, coach and mentor.

Depending on the work load, interns will be asked to assist in other sectors and activities including ad hoc tasks and administrative support. Furthermore, you will support the staff with public diplomacy, Holland Branding and maintaining the database of the Economic department. Among other tasks, the intern has the opportunity to contribute towards creative design: i.e. creation of digital brochures and flyers.
