Human Rights Research Prize for Utrecht PhD Dissertation on Solidarity and Healthcare Commercialization
Eduardo Arenas Catal谩n, who obtained his PhD at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 last year, has been awarded the for his dissertation 鈥楽olidarity and the Right to Health in the Era of Healthcare Commercialization鈥. The jury at Maastricht 木瓜福利影视 says "The book discusses an important matter from the perspective of social rights and takes an innovative approach."
The prize is intended for an excellent young researcher in the field of human rights laws, international criminal law or international humanitarian law. It consists of 3.000 Euro and a seminar on a subject chosen by the laureate, organised together with the International Law Department and the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights of Maastricht Law faculty.

graduated cum laude from the Legal Research Master鈥檚 at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 in 2011. After that, he became a teacher in both Chile, where he grew up, and the Netherlands. He has taught international human rights law at the Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 School of Law and at 木瓜福利影视 College Utrecht. He obtained his PhD at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 in February 2018. His PhD supervisors were prof. Remco Nehmelman (Utrecht 木瓜福利影视) and prof. Leonard Besselink (木瓜福利影视 of Amsterdam).
Transforming health care into a non-market area

In his dissertation, Arenas Catal谩n takes a cross-disciplinary approach to international human rights law, that combines public health, legal, political and social theory, this thesis analyses the right of access to healthcare and the ways in which commercialization has limited this human right. The thesis concludes that under solidarity, the positive obligations of the right to health protect access to healthcare not as an individual right, but as a public good. Protecting the right to health means to transform the provision of healthcare into a non-market area.
