Experimental data lost by ironies keyboard key

Crashing hard drives? Backups gone missing? Bugs in your code? Lost all your data? Who ya gonna call? Just the thought of it! And yet it happens every day. During this Data Horror Week, researchers will share these horror stories, based on their own experience. To prevent you from making the same mistake!

Tell us your horror story, what happened?

A theoretician pushed a button, after I finished a lengthy experiment on properties of a plasma in a Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition reactor. I did not save the last experiment data, and the theoretician entered the experimental room just for a chat on his modeling. Then he pushed a button on the PC keyboard, deleting the measurement data. Luckily, it was one data point in a series, but the missing data point is in the published paper.

How long ago was it?

30 years

How was this solved?

Not

How could this horror be avoided?

Saving data immediately.

What lesson can we learn from this story?

Saving data immediately, and don''t chat before your experiment is done.
