Salvo Nicolosi, Associate Professor at the Utrecht ľϸӰ School of Law, has been awarded a Jean Monnet Chair by the European Commission on European Law and Migration Policies “EULAMP”. The Commission praised the project for its strong commitment to advancing EU values and for its potential to generate meaningful societal impact at both the European and national levels.

Migration is one of the most pressing and contentious issues in Europe, shaping both national and EU political agendas

The adoption of the new Pact on Migration and Asylum in May 2024 marks a pivotal moment in European migration governance. However, as the new rules prepare to take effect in June 2026, significant implementation challenges lie ahead. Meanwhile, several EU Member States have extended internal border checks, revealing ongoing tensions between migration policies and the free movement principles. At the same time, the externalisation of migration controls and the focus on return policies have intensified, raising questions about solidarity, rights, and the future of migration policies.

About the new chair

Hosted by Utrecht ľϸӰ’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, EULAMP will serve as a critical space for students as future professionals and leaders to study and reflect on recent and ongoing legislative reforms and societal challenges, particularly those stemming from border management, asylum and return policies.

The focus of the chair will result in an array of educational and research activities that foster awareness and generate critical new knowledge on European law and migration policies from their design to their execution.

The Jean Monnet Chair in European Migration Law and Policies (EULAMP) encourages young generations to engage more deeply with the study of migration law and policies

The focus of the Chair will result in an array of educational and research activities that foster awareness and generate critical new knowledge on European law and migration policies from their design to their execution. The Chair will thus call for a holistic approach to migration policies in Europe that moves beyond fragmented, sector-specific perspectives. Students will be trained to engage with researchers and stakeholders on all different tiles of the migration policy mosaic through interdisciplinarity, skill-based education and societally-stirred research, which are core pillars of Utrecht ľϸӰ’s educational approach.

About the Jean Monnet programme

The Jean Monnet programme is part of Erasmus+ and supports teaching posts in the field of EU studies. Jean Monnet Chairs are designed to deepen teaching in EU studies embodied in the official curriculum of a higher education institution, and to provide in-depth teaching on EU matters in areas increasingly in demand in the labour market.
