'Draaiing' in the Gardens

In the Botanic Gardens, the installation 'Draaiing' (meaning: rotation) by the artist duo HartvanVeen () can be experienced from 21 May until 1 September 2021. This installation is part of the year's theme 'Branch noise and sheet music'; a theme about musicality in plants in the broadest sense of the word.
'Draaiing' is a work developed during Moving Landscapes, Sense of Place and Oerol. It musically depicts the cycle of water: the flow of water through the roots and vessels and the release of water through the stomata. On a beautiful quiet spot by the water at the Buitenfort between the Evolution Garden and the Birders Den, five double arches of smooth black metal have risen, about 45 centimeters high. By turning the handle of a music box, one of the five compositions written for this specific location in the Botanic Gardens sounds. The rotation of the hand directs the sounds and the sounds direct the gaze, from water through vegetation, to air and back again. Thus, by turning, looking and listening, the infinite rotation of the water among the plants is brought to life.
The visitor himself becomes part of the artwork, by - lying down! - taking a seat under the installation. So there is a direct and physical contact between visitor and plants.
