David van Wijnen in Financieele Dagblad on ‘dark patterns’
Websites are using smarter and smarter tricks to get their visitors' consent to collect tracking cookies. Using ‘dark patterns’, tricks that try to conceal the possibility of refusing the collection of cookies from users, is one of them. David van Wijnen, PhD candidate at the Centre for Public Procurement (UUCePP) and privacy expert, discusses ‘dark patterns’ in the Financieel Dagblad, a Dutch newspaper.
In his article, Van Wijnen argues that 'dark patterns' may conflict with European privacy laws. Van Wijnen argues that the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Dutch privacy watchdog, should quickly clarify to what extent such tricks are allowed.
