Collective reflection upon ethics in research

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are progressing rapidly. CenSAS is currently involved in a project called , exploring how camera data can be used to improve the health and welfare of pigs and laying hens. As with any new development, scientific and technological innovations can raise ethical questions. In late March, CenSAS convened a meeting for collective reflection on the possible societal and ethical impacts of the project. The meeting was attended by researchers from Wageningen 木瓜福利影视 and Research, Eindhoven 木瓜福利影视 of Technology, and Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, as well as representatives from affiliated companies and The Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals.
One of the meeting's assignments was to create a visual representation of the relationships among the project's stakeholders. Participants were provided with tokens and pencils for this task. However, it was found that a 2D map was insufficient to capture the complex and dynamic relationships between the stakeholders in society.
Nevertheless, participants attempted to create a map, which fostered a conversation about the moral values present in society and how different stakeholders communicate with one another. Additionally, the roles of researchers and ethicists were discussed. This creative approach proved to be useful in gaining a more nuanced understanding of the societal context in which this project takes place.
The meeting marked the importance of reflecting on ethical considerations throughout all phases of research and innovation practices. Eventually, this ongoing process involves considering how different values and ideas in society can be incorporated into research activities. We look forward to the next meeting!
