Utrecht ľ�ϸ���Ӱ��, UMC Utrecht and pharmaceutical company Roche Nederland in Woerden have agreed on a collaboration in education, research and healthcare. This strategic collaboration is based on the educational model of 'The New Utrecht School', which aims to intensively involve various scientific disciplines - not just medical ones - in healthcare questions and dilemmas. One of the characteristics of The New Utrecht School is collaboration between science and industry, with the intention to better prepare the new generation of professionals in future healthcare.

Roche, UMC Utrecht and Utrecht ľ�ϸ���Ӱ�� signed a collaboration agreement on Monday 30 September during the Utrecht Science Week for the next three years, with the intention of continuing this collaboration afterwards. The collaborating parties want to tackle challenges in healthcare through their mutual contribution to innovative educational programs and via 'student challenges' on socially relevant themes.

“The aim of this collaboration is to look in a different way at the education of our master’s and PhD-students and medical doctors.  After their studies, they will have an important role in an increasingly complex world of health care, with dilemmas of a medical, ethical, financial and social nature,” says Rector Magnificus Henk Kummeling “It is therefore important that students delve into the dialogue that their field of expertise has with society in a timely manner.”

The added value for educational programmes of Utrecht ľ�ϸ���Ӱ�� is in working with real-world case studies and examples. These will be brought in by the experts of Roche Nederland. Research in the field of healthcare innovation can simply be better with input from the field itself. For Roche Nederland, the collaboration is an attractive way to work together with the most talented young scientists in their own region, not only from a medical background but also from other disciplines such as the life sciences, innovation sciences and the humanities.

With ' The New Utrecht School', Utrecht ľ�ϸ���Ӱ�� and UMC Utrecht want to contribute to better healthcare, among other things by connecting knowledge and practice. The New Utrecht School is the interdisciplinary platform for discussion about the interaction between the healthcare domain, the arts and the sciences. It is becoming increasingly clear that a structural exchange between professionals in the healthcare domain, artists, social parties and scientists is of crucial importance for future professionals in the field of health and care. Utrecht ľ�ϸ���Ӱ�� and UMC Utrecht want to expand and intensify this type of collaboration in the near future.
