In early June, 2021, there was a great deal of public attention for the research report that Merel Jonker wrote in collaboration with the Verwey-Jonker Institute. On June 8, 2021, the Parliament recieved the report, an article about it appeared in the newspaper Trouw and several (radio)news stations paid attention to the study.

Key Findings

The Netherlands has made a reservation to Article 26 of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, which includes the right of children to social security. The Dutch government justifies this reservation by stating that the social security system for parents adequately guarantees children's right to social security. However, the research shows that there are several groups of children in the Netherlands who receive insufficient financial protection through their parents.
