Call for proposals: Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Intensive Workshop 2015

Introduction

Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ wants to enhance successful international collaboration in its strategic themes (Life Sciences’, ‘Sustainability’, ‘Institutions’, ‘Dynamics of Youth’) and research focus areas () . Therefore Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ offers grants for the organisation of intensive workshops in cooperation with international partners that have an international high qualified profile in a UU strategic themes or research focus area and are listed as Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Partners, UUP (see Annex 1).

In this call for proposals an intensive workshop is an expert meeting of academic leaders to strengthen existing or initiate new collaborations between international partners (at least one UUP). The main purpose of the workshop should be to explore and set up new (external funded) cooperation projects in research (e.g. Horizon 2020 projects) and/or education (e.g. structured mobility, e-learning activities,  joint summer schools, Erasmus+ projects) clearly linked to one of the strategic themes or research focus areas of Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ.

Grant

Each selected application is offered a seed funding to a maximum of € 7.500 as co-funding to organise the workshop. The organisation or participation of staff in existing courses, seminars or conferences will not be funded. The grant can contribute to cover costs for travel, accommodation and organisation.

Eligibility and conditions

In order to be considered eligible for an intensive workshop grant, submitted proposals should meet the following requirements:

Applications should concern one of the 4 strategic research themes  or 11 research focus areas.
The application should be submitted by a UU researcher/teacher.
All partners (of which at least one UUP) should have an international high qualified profile in the relevant field.
The workshop will have to take place in academic yea 2015-2016.
A report with an overview of achievements and deliverables will have to be submitted within one month after the workshop is held, as well as the results of the workshop after one year.

Organisation

An Intensive Workshop can be held at any participating institution. Based on the budget in the application, the UU grant of maximum € 7.500 will be transferred as an advance payment to the UU faculty, department or institute of the selected UU applicant. After receiving the grant the sending or receiving UU faculty, department or institute is responsible for arranging all further (financial) practicalities for the workshop. In case the workshop is organised at a partner institution, the UU faculty, department or institute should settle the financial and practical arrangements together with the hosting partner.

Applications

Applications must be submitted electronically as one single pdf-document by a UU researcher/teacher and should include:

Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Intensive Workshop 2015 application form (see below);
Electronic copy (scan) of signed letter by the leading workshop candidate contact person of each of the participating partner institutions, stating their commitment and their role in (organising) the workshop;
Electronic copy (scan) of signed letter of approval by dean (obligatory for UU participants) or director of each participating institution;
Proof of a balanced financial commitment co-funding. of partners to co-organise the Intensive Workshop or concrete follow up activities;
Short CV of the participants (max 2 A4 per participant, no complete publication list);
First draft of the workshop programme.

Application procedure

The UU applicant should submit the electronic application (application form and annexes) with reference ‘Intensive Workshop 2015 – [name main UU applicant] to UU Office of Academic Affairs at iss.oo@uu.nl. Submitted proposals (deadline 15 June 2015) will be assessed on basis of the following criteria:

Eligibility of application
Motivation to organise the workshop
Clear reference to (external funded) follow up initiative
Drafts programme and expected deliverables of the workshop
Added value for the workshop for future cooperation between UU and the partners
Leading scientific quality of the participants
Budget calculation and breakdown
Expressed financial commitment (co-funding) of all partners as well as the UU research groups to support the activity
Application includes all required documents

Application deadline and information

Complete applications should be sent in one single pdf-document with reference to ‘UU Intensive Workshop [name main UU applicant]’ by email to iss.oo@uu.nl. Deadline for application is 15 June 2015.

The selection of eligible proposals will primarily be based on the application criteria mentioned above. However, secondarily a fair division among strategic themes, UUPs and research groups at Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ can be taken in account. All applications will be reviewed shortly after June 15.
