Book about patriarch of Constantinopel's inspiring views on ecology
In The Green Patriarch in the Netherlands: An Ongoing Conversation, Dutch theologists present the ecologic and spiritual vision of Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. At an international summit in Halki/Heybeliada (Turkey) the editors of the book, Jan Jorrit Hasselaar (CAH Vilentum College, Almere) and Prof. (VU / UU Religious Studies) presented the first copy to the Patriarch.
Bartholomew I, spiritual leader of 300 million Christians, is a bridge-builder who is passionate about protecting the natural environment. Surprisingly, he is little known in the West. In May 2014 he visited the Netherlands for a broad discussion on theology, ecology, economy and politics. The fruits of the visit to the Netherlands have now been made available in a full-length book publication: The Green Patriarch in the Netherlands: An Ongoing Conversation.
It contains various speeches by the 'green patriarch' and responses from key academics and politicians, including a former Prime Minister (Jan Peter Balkenende). There are impressions of the meetings with the Dutch King Willem-Alexander and the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs Frans Timmermans (now Vice-President of the European Commission). The texts are accompanied by more than 200 photos. More than just a record of the diverse and memorable meetings that took place during the visit, this book aims to stimulate a fruitful and ongoing conversation among people in government, science, business, religion and society at large.
The book enables a broader audience to benefit from the insights of the 'green patriarch'.
