Alexander Makarov elected as Fellow of Royal Society

Prof. Alexander Makarov has been elected as Fellow of the Royal Society, the UK鈥檚 national academy of sciences. In total, the Royal Society welcomes 51 new Fellows, 10 Foreign Members and one Honorary Fellow this year. The researchers are selected for their outstanding contributions to scientific understanding.

Professor by Special Appointment

Physicist Alexander Makarov (1966) is Professor by Special Appointment of High Resolution Mass Spectrometry at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视, in addition to his position as Director of Global Research for Life Sciences Mass Spectrometry at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Makarov is the inventor of the Orbitrap mass analyzer, which has changed the field of chemical analysis, including proteomics, the analysis of proteins. Since its introduction in 2005, Orbitrap-based mass spectrometers have led to many breakthroughs in the field of physical, chemical and life sciences.

Royal Society

The Royal Society, formally The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, is the national academy of sciences of the United Kingdom. It elects new Fellows and Foreign Members yearly. Past Fellows and Foreign Members have included Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Dorothy Hodgkin and Stephen Hawking.

In a statement, President of the Royal Society Venki Ramakrishnan emphasized the importance of scientific thinking at this time of global crisis, and added: 鈥淲hile election to the Fellowship is a recognition of exceptional individual contributions to the sciences, it is also a network of expertise that can be drawn on to address issues of societal, and global significance. This year鈥檚 Fellows and Foreign Members have helped shape the 21st century.鈥
