Agnes Andeweg new visiting professor South Africa
With effect from 28 July 2025, Dr Agnes Andeweg will be a visiting professor at three South African universities (Cape Town, Bellville and Stellenbosch) as part of the alternating chair in Dutch Studies in South Africa. This chair is a joint project of the Taalunie, the Suider Afrikaanse Vereniging vir Neerlandistiek (SAVN) and the Internationale Vereniging voor Neerlandistiek (IVN).
Visiting professor Agnes Andeweg will teach a lecture series on Modern Literature, focusing on postcolonial literature. She also advises (PhD) students on their research and theses/dissertations during this period and, if desired, contributes to research projects of the local staff. The stay will last until about mid-October. The exchange chair is intended to give an impulse to scientific research on Dutch in South Africa.
Dr Agnes Andeweg is associate professor of literary studies (modern literature) and cluster chair in art and museum studies, linguistics, literature and philosophy at 木瓜福利影视 College Utrecht. She specialised in the gothic novel (1800-present) and in Dutch cultural history and cultural memory. She published on the ways literature helps shape individual and collective identities, with a focus on gender, sexuality, colonial past and national identity.
The theme of this research chair is Modern Literature with a focus on postcolonial literature. The research stay is combined with an online track. To maximise the efficiency of the stay for students, students are offered the opportunity to attend lectures and working groups of the visiting professor online. The professor stays at the same location, but gives lectures at all three universities every week.
The purpose of this chair is multifaceted:
- promoting research locally in relation to Dutch
- academic collaboration
- sharing specific expertise
- raising the status of Dutch Studies
- increasing the visibility of Dutch in Southern Africa
The visiting professor also gives a public lecture during the exchange.
