A piece of DOM in P-Olympos
The construction of the modular, circular and energy-saving parking garage P-Olympos on the edge of the Utrecht Science Park is almost complete. On Thursday 30 September and 7 October, colleagues from the Sustainability and Real Estate & Campus Programme and students from the Faculty of Science literally contributed to the construction. Together, they filled the gabions with recycled materials, including debris from the Dom tower.
A piece of the Cathedral
The gabions are filled with a mixture of locally obtained, second-hand stones, roof tiles and concrete rubble. To give extra attention to the fact that we, as a university, are linked to the city, we contacted the project team working on the renovation of the Dom tower in Utrecht. Material that had to be replaced was used to fill a two-metre-long piece of rubble. A visible and tangible result of our relationship with the city of Utrecht.
Living Lab
The gabions form a wall in which mosses and other greenery will grow. This way, fine dust can be captured and we contribute to a better environment and green surroundings. The gabions and surrounding ground level at P-Olympos are part of a new 'Living Lab' in which research and education in the university's own area come together and in which it is investigated how the construction of a new building can be integrated into the existing landscape and can contribute to local biodiversity.
