A new perspective on diversity policy

How can organisations become more inclusive? Prof. dr. Jojanneke van der Toorn, member of the Utrecht Young Academy, and her colleagues study the (non)sense of anti-bias training programmes.

Bias amongst employers is one of the reasons why creating a diverse and inclusive organisation can be hard. Established interventions to reduce these biases, such as anti-bias training programmes, are not always effective. Hence, Jojanneke and her colleagues, prof. dr. Naomi Ellemers and dr. Wiebren Jansen, started the project New perspectives: a novel approach to motivate and support organisations in developing a science-based diversity policy.

Recently, the team published a fact sheet (in Dutch) which describes the six most important findings on the effects of anti-bias training programmes and provides advice for organisations that would like to implement an anti-bias training program themselves. The animation below summarises the key findings.

Jojanneke van der Toorn is also involved in a project of the Utrecht Young Academy Privacy and Inclusion together with Martine Veldhuizen. This project focuses on how ideas from psychology, law and history together contribute to understanding tensions between privacy and inclusion in the workplace.
