Martijn - Global Urban Transformations

The different qualitative and quantitative research skills that I have acquired in this programme help me identify and analyse the complexities of urban life through a multi-scalar interdisciplinary lens.

When I was searching for a Master鈥檚 programme, I was not really sure what to look for. My interests were broad, and I was not really sure how much I enjoyed doing research. The broad interdisciplinary scope and variety of research methods of the Global Urban Transformations research Master鈥檚 programme immediately caught my attention.

This two-year Master鈥檚 programme has provided me with a deeper understanding on a variety of different topics that I am interested in, such as urban social life, sustainability, and urban development. The different qualitative and quantitative research skills that I have acquired in this programme help me identify and analyse the complexities of urban life through a multi-scalar interdisciplinary lens.

I really like the pace and structure of the programme. Through the courses of the first year, you get a great understanding of different topics while also improving your research skills. By the end of the year, you will put this into practice when you start developing your thesis proposal. The second year is dedicated to writing your Master鈥檚 thesis. Through the help of your teachers and supervisors, you will be able to conduct your own research and develop a thesis that lives up to the standards of an academic paper.

Initially I was concerned that this programme would exclusively lead me to pursuing an academic career as a PhD candidate. However, I discovered that the knowledge and skills that you acquire in this programme are also of great relevance for a career in governance, research agencies, consultancies or non-governmental organisations (NGOs). These are some career paths that suit me better.

What I also like about this programme is the small-scale setting that allows you to really get to know your fellow students and even your teachers. The small-scale setting enhances the accessibility of your teachers, making it easier to seek guidance and support. And the small number of students and the different group projects that you take part in, give you the opportunity to work with nearly every classmate. Which for me has laid the basis for new amazing lasting friendships.

The Global Urban Transformations research Master鈥檚 programme has helped my become an experienced researcher with a great understanding of a variety of different topics in the field of urban geography. The small-scale two-year programme helped me grow both academically and personally.
