Iranians deserve the truth
The recent wave of violent demonstrations in Iran has not yet retreated. However, the target of the protests seems to change constantly. Dr Pooyan Tamimi Arab (Philosophy and Religion Studies) and Dr Ammar Maleki examined this apparent contradiction in the .
Whereas two weeks ago, the Iranian population mourned for the liquidated general Qassem Soleimani, they gathered in the streets to protest Soleimani and his regime only a few days later. The reason for this was that the government turned out to have lied about its role in the crash of a Ukranian passanger airplane. This might make Iran seem like a polarised country, but a survey that Maleki and Tamimi Arab conducted shows that it is merely divided (with a large majority against the current regime). Because the regime conceals the truth and secretly but violently oppresses any opposition, it is important that international pressure and measures hold the Iranian government accountable for its actions. This way, the fundamental right to the truth stays protected.
