Workshop: Sacred Landscapes in the Premodern World

On 31 October and 1 November, the two-day workshop ‘Sacred Landscapes in the Premodern World’ will explore the concepts of spatiality, landscape, and the sacred (or religion) in the premodern world, ranging from antiquity to the Renaissance.
Sacred space across disciplines
The workshop encourages discussions on concepts such as sacred space, sacred landscapes, sacrality, and cultural heritage in the related disciplines of literature, history, archaeology, and art. It will place a particular focus, though not exclusively, on medieval literature (specifically saints’ lives), manuscript history, and the connections between these themes and the early history of printed books.
Sacred landscapes and printing in late medieval England
As part of the workshop, (Keio ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ, Japan) will give a guest lecture sponsored by the . She will discuss the subject of ‘Shaping sacred landscapes and early printing in late medieval England’. For those only attending the lecture and the drinks afterwards, prior registration is not required.
Earn 1 ECTS
RMA students affiliated with Dutch research schools can earn 1 ECTS by attending both days of the workshop and writing a 1200 word paper on its central questions and themes.
Lunch and drinks will be provided by the workshop. Attendance is free and everyone is warmly invited to participate. The workshop is organised by Natalia Petrovskaia and sponsored by the , Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Humanities Global Engagement Fund, the Maartje Draak Fonds, and the Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ Centre for Medieval Studies.
