Workshop on AI for Privacy (AI4P)
Managing privacy online continues to be a challenging task. On one hand, regulations such as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) are coming into effect with the aim of providing transparency and privacy guarantees to users. On the other hand, privacy violations are occurring more than ever. Increasingly, users need intelligent tools that can help them understand, analyze, and manage privacy online. Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques can be used to develop new algorithms or methods to address this.
Preserving privacy of users becomes especially difficult in social software, where users interact extensively, such as collaborative systems, massively online multiplayer games, or Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Traditional software, such as banking or e-commerce systems, allow users to make transactions on their own account and thus ensure isolation of transactions; i.e., one user's actions do not have affect on a second user.
However, the main idea of social software is that users' "transactions" are interleaved in a way that facilitates social interaction. For example, in online social networks, users are allowed to create and share content about themselves and others. The content may affect others in ways that might not be foreseen by others up front; i.e., a piece of content may easily reach unintended individuals and further inference can reveal more information about the user.
Hence, preserving privacy in social software requires methods that are beyond those used for traditional software. This brings about interesting research questions such as: How to learn the privacy preferences of users? How to ensure that each individual's privacy is respected? How to develop software to help users to manage their privacy better? How to explain the privacy decisions of the software to users?
