Training for tutors: skills for coaching and challenging conversations
This training focuses on your role as a tutor and how you can engage with students in a pleasant and effective manner. The session is aimed at developing a coaching attitude, which you can use to guide students in developing an independent and self-directed approach to studying. In your work as a tutor, you may also encounter students who are struggling with stress, mental health issues, or other difficulties. You may find these conversations difficult or stressful. How do you deal with the problems they talk about or with emotional outbursts? How do you set boundaries? How do you ensure that the student feels truly heard? How do you ensure that you yourself do not become overwhelmed by what you have been told?
Please note: this training course focuses primarily on individual conversations and therefore NOT on social safety in groups.
We practice conversation skills and introduce a few conversation models for this purpose. Participants report that they learn a lot from the content of the course, but also from exchanging ideas with colleagues.
The training is given by Yke Eijkemans, wellbeing trainer at SOO. In addition to her work for SOO, she has also been a tutor for many years.
