The Great Disenchantment: The Struggle of Institutions

IOS Dialogue

to

This year, we are launching the IOS dialogues to invite more critical discussion across and between the IOS Platforms. These dialogues will be shaped in collaboration with the IOS Platforms, the IOS Programme Team and the IOS Office. The first one, entitled The Great Disenchantment: the Struggle of Institutions, is planned on Monday October 13th.

A troubling state of institutions

For a long time, certain sets of institutions have been believed to be essential pillars of 鈥榦pen societies鈥: liberal democracy, international law and state-led military security. However, we have also observed how these and other institutions struggle with global societal challenges such as ecological breakdown, the rise of authoritarianism and escalating geopolitical tensions, most notably in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine. During this first IOS-dialogue, we discuss the troubling state of these institutions and if, how and to what extent we should and can transform institutions.

Program

We start with three short talks by Jeroen Oomen, Brianne McGonigle Leyh, and Jolle Demmers. These talks will be followed by discussion and dialogue amongst panelists and participants, moderated by James Kennedy. The afternoon will be concluded with drinks (17.00-18.00).
