Post Elections Discussion and Award Ceremony

A sociologist, a jurist and an urban geographer meet in a theatre to discuss about the result of the Dutch parliamentary elections 2025. We will see what one says to the other. Furthermore, we will celebrate and award the best migration-related master's thesis from Utrecht 木瓜福利影视.
Migration remains one of the most contested and defining issues in Dutch politics. In each election cycle, it emerges as a central theme, shaping party platforms, influencing voter behavior, and often acting as a litmus test for coalition compatibility. Time and again, we have witnessed how debates on migration divide the political landscape in the Netherlands. Most notably, the last two Dutch governments fell due to irreconcilable differences among coalition partners on this very topic.

This persistent pattern underscores the need for critical reflection. What do the results of the most recent elections tell us about how migration continues to shape Dutch politics? How will the topic influence the upcoming government formation? And what might this mean for the longer-term trajectory of Dutch policy and constitutional stability?

To help us unpack these pressing questions, we are delighted to welcome Professor Elaine Mak, Dean of our Faculty and a distinguished expert in constitutional law and institutional governance. She will be joined by Professor Marcel Lubbers, a sociologist whose research focuses on political sociology, social cohesion, and nationalism. Their discussion will be moderated by Dr. Ilse van Liempt an expert on the politics of migration with a focus on belonging, citizenship and in/exclusion. Together, they will offer an interdisciplinary perspective on the role of migration in shaping the current political moment in the Netherlands and what we might expect going forward.
Master Thesis Award Ceremony

As the second part of this event, we are proud to present the Migration Thesis Awards, recognizing the three best Master's theses on migration written by students at Utrecht 木瓜福利影视. Now in its third consecutive year, this award ceremony has become a valued tradition, celebrating academic excellence and the vital contributions of our students to one of the most pressing and complex issues of our time.
These outstanding theses reflect the depth, diversity, and originality of thought that migration research demands. Whether addressing legal, sociological, political, or humanitarian dimensions, the selected works demonstrate how rigorous academic inquiry can contribute meaningfully to public debate and policymaking.
By honoring these students, we not only celebrate their individual achievements but also emphasize the crucial role of critical, research-based thinking in shaping the future of migration discourse within academia and beyond.
To round off the event, we invite all guests to a Dutch tradition in the bar next door. We will 'borrel' together in the caf茅 of Parnassos, to continue conversations that started before, network, and just have a good time.
