PhD defence Michail Moatsos: Global Absolute Poverty
On 25 September, Michail Moatsos (History and Art History) defends his dissertation Global Absolute Poverty, Present and Past since 1820 at the 木瓜福利影视 Hall.
A standard for poverty
When measuring length we take for granted that all meters are created equal, thereby using a standard. The extent to which the measurement of global poverty is fortunate to have an equally satisfying standard is the cornerstone of Moatsos' research.
Extreme poverty
Moatsos shows that the current standard is not adequate and synthesizes an alternative more intuitive and more transparent method using the cost of basic needs framework. On the long run this research provides evidence that extreme poverty on a global scale during the 19th century was less prominent than previously thought, while in the recent years it is more prominent than what the traditional method shows.
