Openness a Mission Challenged
European Higher Education Society (EAIR) forum 27-29 Augustus 2025
Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 is hosting this year's 2025 Forum of the European Higher Education Society (EAIR). From 27 to 29 August, it will focus on the theme Openness a Mission Challenged. Together with researchers, scientific leaders, young academics, policy makers, administrators and practitioners, we will reflect on important issues surrounding this theme such as academic freedom, autonomy and the degree of openness in research and education and look for workable solutions.
Programme Openness, a Mission Challenged
In the programme, there are several in which the degree of openness, academic freedom and autonomy in the areas of governance & management, teaching & learning, quality assurance, research policy, internationalisation and digitalisation are explored in more detail.
The keynotes will be delivered by
- Open Science and Education: a Mission towards students and society, Manon Kluijtmans (UU)
- Openness challenged: the university at risk, Marijk van der Wende (UU)
- Universities as the Enemy: How Rhetoric and Policies are Eroding Open Science, John Douglass (UCBerkeley)
- Generative AI and the changing higher education field: evolution or revolution?, Benetto Lepori (USI).

2025 Forum
(EAIR) is an international network of researchers, policy makers, students and higher education professionals. The organisation connects research, policy and practice at institutional, national and international levels. Since 1979, EAIR has promoted knowledge sharing and collaboration within the higher education field. Every year, they have a forum on a topical theme. This year, Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 is organising the forum in different university buildings (Janskerkhof 2-3 on 27 August, Victor J. Koningsberger Building and Minnaert Building on 28 and 29 August).
The forum is co-sponsored by the research theme Institutions for Open Societies and the Higher Education Research focus area, Centre for Academic Teaching.
