Lunch debate: Choosing democracy

Institutions for Open Societies organizes

to

On 29 October, the Netherlands will go to the polls. We will vote for a political party and also for the rules that politicians must adhere to. Democracy is more than just casting your vote, although elections are an important aspect of our democracy. Has democracy itself become the subject of the elections? What if the largest party is unable to form a government? Would that be undemocratic?

Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) is organising an inspiring and stimulating lunch meeting on democracy and elections on the day before the elections. What do these elections tell us about the (in)stability of the Dutch political system, the rule of law and the values that unite us? Do politicians still mean the same thing when they use the word 鈥渄emocracy鈥?

Five experts from Utrecht will discuss the current events:

  • Prof. Elaine Mak (Professor of Encyclopaedia of Legal Sciences and Legal Theory): on the rule of law in election programmes and the legal foundations of democratic choice.
  • Dr Hans Vollaard (political scientist): about the possibilities of a stable, reliable and effective cabinet that stands up for all residents and achieves results.
  • Prof. Annelien de Dijn (Professor of Modern Political History): on how democratisation and inclusivity are prompting a new call for the protection of privileged minorities.
  • Prof. Marcel Verweij (Professor of Philosophical Ethics): The #WOinActie voting guide: what are the parties saying about science and higher education?
  • Dr. Jaap van Slageren (political geographer): about where the growth of populist radical right-wing politics comes from and what changing voting behaviour says about the stability of our democracy.

The discussion will be moderated by Sam Hoogendoorn (Student Legal Research Master) and Prof. Hanneke van Eijken (Professor of Rule of Law and Democracy).

This event will be in Dutch. More information about this lunch lecture, you can find here.
