Lecture and Dialogue | Nuclear Waste: Thinking in Time with Penny Harvey

to

Join and participate in this lecture and dialogue on Nuclear waste Thinking ‘in time’: an ethnographic perspective on the political and environmental ecologies of the UK’s nuclear wastes, organized by the  Energy in Transition community. The lecture is followed by reflections and dialogue how to live with nuclear waste and the role of transdisciplinary research in dealing with this challenge.

As nuclear energy re-emerges on the Dutch policy agenda, with the planning to build several , the debate on nuclear waste in the Netherlands has noticeably diminished. Although there is a clear international consensus that deep geological storage is the most secure option for nuclear waste, no site has yet been identified for its disposal in the Netherlands. Pending the development of a new policy for final storage (see ), nuclear waste in the Netherlands is currently stored above ground (). From the understanding that nuclear waste policies requires both techno-scientific and social expertise, what can we learn from ethnographic studies on nuclear waste storage in the UK?

In this meeting, Professor Penny Harvey will share her perspectives on this subject, drawing from her anthropological research and collaborative work within  research network. Her lecture will be followed by reflections from UU researchers and a dialogue with participants.
