Simulating permafrost in a changing climate
Permafrost thaw has received a lot of attention in the last decade, mainly due to its potential impact on the global carbon cycle. However, permafrost also affects the stability of mountain rockwalls, is a major control in the hydrological cycle and creates dynamic landscapes that can be completely transformed by thawing within a few decades. Simulating this wide range of phenomena requires models that are adapted to the specific spatial and temporal scales of the problem. In the past years, we have developed a modular platform, CryoGrid, that can host a variety of different permafrost models. We present applications and research highlights with CryoGrid, which range from local impact assessment for infrastructure to global mapping of the permafrost thermal regime.
