Not surprisingly, there are demands for a new vision of the future. But what should our shared future look like? What options for alternative economic systems do we have? In this Filosofisch Caf茅, philosophers Caleb AlthorpeHannah McHugh, and Catarina Neves (all Utrecht 木瓜福利影视) discuss some of the alternatives (both positive and negative): economic democracy, postgrowth economies, and authoritarian societies.

Alternative economic systems

While the neo-liberal capitalist system has undeniably fostered significant material welfare and lifted millions from poverty, it has also given rise to the pressing challenges of our age: deepening ecological crises, growing inequalities, pervasive corporate power, deficits in the non-material dimensions of wellbeing, and persisting disadvantages related to characteristics such as race, gender, disability, and class.

How achievable are the alternative economic systems, and how might they impact our ability to achieve a more sustainable, equal, and fair world?

Filosofisch Caf茅

On the last Tuesday of every month, Idwerd de Graaf and Jeroen Hopster organise the Filosofisch Caf茅, hosted by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. Each session features a philosopher who discusses a topic from their research, after which the audience is invited to join the discussion and ask questions.
