to

After a succesful first year the Contesting Governance Platform, together with the students and staff from Cultural Anthropology and Educational Sciences, is proud to announce the continuation of the Re-Imagining the 木瓜福利影视 film series. Last year, we watched and explored The Uprising (2019) by Pravini Baboeram, Everything Must Fall (2019) by Rehad Desai, All Was Good (2022) by Teresa Braggs, and The Blockade (2012) by Igor Bezinovic. We launch this year's edition of Re-Imagining the 木瓜福利影视 by watching Wake Up, Serbia! (2025) by Ra眉l Gallego Abell谩n, which explores the struggles of students during the recent student uprisings in Serbia.

Re-Imagining the 木瓜福利影视 Film Series

By using film as a catalyst for discussion, we aim to create an environment for critical reflection on the challenges and opportunities facing the university as a place for critical reflection. This series is an invitation to rethink the university as a critical political space, to dream up new possibilities, and to chart a course towards a more equitable, inclusive, and transformative vision of learning and knowledge cultivation. This is especially crucial in view of the student-led liberation struggles we鈥檝e witnessed on campus, as well as the unprecedented budget cuts announced by the far-right government. Each screening will be followed by a conversation led by invited discussants who will help frame key themes and open the floor for reflection. In these post-film discussions, participants will also be encouraged to experiment with various forms of knowledge-sharing, such as storytelling and creating collective archives. These interactive elements are designed to foster a collaborative environment where attendees can collectively re-imagine the purpose and future of the university.

Wake Up, Serbia! (2025)

Wake Up, Serbia! is a 2025 documentary directed by Ra眉l Gallego Abell谩n. The documentary focuses on the student uprisings in Serbia, the longest strike in modern European history. The strike came as a reaction to an accident, in which 16 people were killed, on 1 November 2024. This tragedy became the figurehead of the corruption within Serbia鈥檚 government. Under the slogan 鈥淪erbia, Wake Up鈥, students took to the streets to advocate against governmental corruption. Over the span of 9 months students organised demonstrations to advocate for transparency and accountability. The documentary shows the students鈥 struggles and victories. It shows their fight for Serbia鈥檚 future.

After watching the film we will have a discussion with experts, followed by a creative exercise.
