FEST: 'Science and the Public in Action: Can and should climate scientists be activists?'
Friday Earth Sciences Talk by Prof. Dr Erik van Sebille
As scientists, we are not only expected to do excellent research; we are also expected to have an impact on society. One way to have such an impact is through public engagement.
Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 strongly supports the public engagement and science communication activities of academics and students. However, the effectiveness of these activities is often not measured and the methods underpinning the activities are rarely evidence-based.
In this seminar, I will give an overview of what is known (and unknown) about the effectiveness of public engagement by academics. I will particularly focus on advocacy and activism, and discuss to what extent, when and how (climate) scientists can be activistic in the public domain.
With the FEST, we intend to bring the departments of Earth Sciences and Physical Geography together. The aim is to present (mostly) Utrecht-based Earth Sciences in an accessible way, primarily in order to stay familiar with each other鈥檚 work across disciplines. Simultaneously, this provides an excellent platform to help (in particular MSc.) students in their orientation on possible graduation specialisations and future careers.
