FEST: 'Global warming happens in Spring'
Friday Earth Sciences Talk
Speaker: Prof. Friederike Wagner-Cremer
Topic: Global warming happens in Spring
The advance of Spring onset is the most pronounced signal of ongoing climate change. Traditionally set on the moment of vegetation greening, Spring onset can be reconstructed through studying fossil leaves. Over the past years we developed a series of palaeobotanical proxies that capture past Spring conditions in a unique manner. I will guide you through the process of proxy development and application where we combine plant physiological and palaeoecological techniques.
Focusing on Spring dynamics in the high northern latitudes, results from some of the most spectacular fieldwork areas are presented which highlight the importance of vegetation – climate interactions. Placing Spring dynamics into a societal context, the impact on ancient and modern society will be discussed.
With the Friday Earth Sciences Talks (FEST) we intend to bring the departments of Earth Sciences and Physical Geography together. The aim is to present (mostly) Utrecht-based Earth Sciences in an accessible way in order i) to stay familiar with each other’s work across disciplines and ii) to help (in particular MSc.) students in their orientation on possible graduation specialisations and future careers. Alumni are also invited.
