Dr Francien Peterse: From land to sea: lipid biomarkers as tracers of organic carbon transfer.

Rivers play a key role in the global (organic) carbon cycle by connecting the terrestrial and marine carbon pools. The burial of terrestrial organic carbon (OC) in marine sediments exerts a strong control on the atmospheric CO2 concentration. To constrain the amount and composition of the terrestrial OC in marine sediments, we need a better understanding of the origin and evolution of the terrestrial OC signal transported by rivers. During the FEST, I will show how the use of lipid biomarkers allows differentiating between soil, vascular plant, and aquatic OC sources, and enables tracing these distinct carbon pools along the soil-river-ocean continuum.

With the Friday Earth Sciences Talks (FEST) we intend to bring the departments of Earth Sciences and Physical Geography together. The aim is to present (mostly) Utrecht-based Earth Sciences in an accessible way in order to stay familiar nwith each other’s work across disciplines. Alumni and students are also invited, in particular MSc students in Earth Sciences. (Access free; no registration required.)
