FEST: 'Finding Argoland: reconstructing a lost continent in SE Asia'

to

Friday Earth Sciences Talk
Speaker: Dr Eldert Advokaat

In the last decade, I have studied the geology of SE Asia, and conducted several fieldworks in the region. Despite the rainforest cover, limited exposures show a glimpse of a fascinating region that has inspired many earth scientists. The region hosts an intensely deformed, long-lived accretionary orogen that contains several generations of Gondwana-derived continental fragments, with enigmatic age and field relations.

In this talk, I will show how we restore the subduction zones in this orogen, and how we reconstruct the paleogeography of the plates that carried these fragments from the northern margin of Gondwana to their present-day position. After this overview, I will also give some impressions of fieldwork in SE Asia.

With the Friday Earth Sciences Talks (FEST) we intend to bring the departments of Earth Sciences and Physical Geography together. The aim is to present (mostly) Utrecht-based Earth Sciences in an accessible way in order i) to stay familiar with each other鈥檚 work across disciplines and ii) to help (in particular MSc.) students in their orientation on possible graduation specialisations and future careers. Alumni are also invited.
