On Tuesday 16 September, we look forward to welcoming you to a special and insightful evening on the development of warfare and the lessons that the past can teach us about the world today. The evening will feature a lecture by Prof. Jan Hoffenaar, Professor of Military History at Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ and Head of Research at the Netherlands Institute for Military History.

Programme:

• 17.30 uur: Doors open with welcome drink
• 17.45 uur: Musical opening provided by the brass section of the Utrecht Student Concert
• 18.00 uur: Lecture by Prof. Jan Hoffenaar: The history of warfare and lessons for the present
• 18.45 uur: Reflection by alumnus Bart Hollants, military innovation strategist at NATO (Norfolk) and opportunity for questions
• 19.00 uur: Musical interlude provided by the brass section of the Utrecht Student Concert
• 19.30 uur: Start of dinner with the speaker
• 21.00 uur: End of the evening

A historical perspective on current tensions In a time of geopolitical unrest, this evening offers context and insight. Jan Hoffenaar takes us through the most important developments in warfare throughout the centuries and reflects on the strategic, moral and political lessons that can be drawn from this for contemporary conflicts.

Music, reflection and encounter The evening will be enhanced by musical contributions from musicians. The lecture will be followed by a reflection by an expert with practical experience – an alumnus of Utrecht ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ. During the meal that follows, there will be an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with the speaker and other attendees.

The lecture will be in Dutch; an English summary can be provided upon request.

Costs Participation in the evening, including lecture and dinner (main course, drinks, coffee/tea) costs €28.50.
