On Thursday 4 September, we are bringing a touch of South Africa to Utrecht. In honour of Heritage Day – also known as Braai Day or Shaka Day – we will celebrate the richness and diversity of South African heritage. Enjoy live music, inspiring stories and a festive braai: the South African way of barbecuing. An evening full of flavour, encounters and connection – with and for Utrecht staff, alumni and friends of South Africa.

Programme:  

• 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.: Happy Hour with live music from Pape Kora Trio (free admission)
• approx. 6:15 p.m.: A substantive interlude with South African PhD candidate Michelle Louw, alumna Betty Kgomotlokwa Lallie and alumnus Jaap de Visser on diversity, Heritage Day, and education and sport as a means of development.
• 7:15 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.: South African Braai (registration required)
• 8:15 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.: South African urban dance workshop – by Eva Scherpenisse. Dance along or be inspired! Eva will take you on a journey through the world of Pantsula, Amapiano, Afro House and a touch of Zulu dance. She will talk about the origins and meaning of these energetic styles – and anyone who wants to can join in!

The cost for the South African Braai is €27.50 per person. This includes a festive welcome drink; other drinks are at your own expense.

About the speakers:
Michelle Louw is a PhD candidate in plant ecology at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Faculty of Geosciences. Betty Kgomotlokwa Lallie completed the Global Sports Master's programme and is now Director of the Score Foundation in South Africa. Jaap de Visser studied law and is now Professor of Multilevel Government, Law and Development at the Dullah Omar Institute, ľ¹Ï¸£ÀûÓ°ÊÓ of the Western Cape.

About the musicians: the Pape Kora Trio consists of three passionate musicians: Jur de Vries (guitar), Ibou Ndong (percussion) and Pape Kora (vocals and kora). Together they bring an enchanting mix of sounds, rhythms and stories.
