# Environmental Governance for Sustainable Filmmaking

Greening Media Industries

to

The environmental footprint of the film and television industry is massive. The production of media content consumes a vast amount of energy, creates an enormous volume of waste and emits a large quantity of CO2. In the context of society鈥檚 increasing ecological awareness, various players within the media industries have recently started to address their environmental impact. Film festivals are reflecting on their carbon emission, and industry meetings and panel discussions are scheduled to exchange ideas about green film production and distribution. Funding agencies are implementing measures to stimulate resource efficient productions, and offer guidelines and tool kits to help the industry work more ecology-friendly. Production houses are developing strategies and best practices to meet the environmental requirements that guarantee a green seal.

In this online presentation, Lara Hendrikx and Marijn Kallenberg from the Sustainable Development master program of Utrecht 木瓜福利影视 will give an overview of different modes of environmental governance which provides insights in ways to make the Dutch film industry more sustainable. They will discuss examples of measures that are implemented in different national and regional film sectors in Europe and point out best practices to encourage sustainable filmmaking. How can a transformative change of the film industry be set in motion? Who are the main actors to stimulate such a change? Is it enough to rely on self-governance or should to-down policies be implemented? And how can different policy strategies be coordinated?
