Create a smooth work-relation with your supervisor (2023-I)

Trainer: Drs. Paula Meesters, PhD-psychologist

Learning objectives

The aim of this course is to enhance awareness of your personal qualities (your ‘strengths and weaknesses’) in communication and interaction. By increasing your skills in purposeful self-reflection, communication and interaction you will learn to:

  • Cope better with feedback and criticism of your supervisors;
  • Cope better with possible conflict;
  • Cope better with being dependent on your supervisors/need for independency;
  • Understand your own influence on communication;
  • Listen carefully.

These coping skills are an important part of the ability to take the lead in your own research process and team.

Instructional method

The course provides an equal balance between experience (opportunity to reflect on your personal development), observation and reflection (self-tests and discussion), theoretical background (communication models like Leary’s Rose, core quality quadrant of Ofman, Cognitive Behavioural approach) and skills training (listening skills and transparent communication). It is required you are willing to share some personal insights, values and experiences.

Programme

The course consists of 3 sessions of two hours each.

  • The first session is focused on the communication model ‘Leary’s Rose’, and the interaction model of Ofman (Core Quality Quadrant). A mindfulness meditation exercise is used to deal with interactions under stress.
  • The second session deals with Listening Skills (Summarizing, Open Questions, and the ‘Gas station’ exercise;
  • The third session is about dealing with feedback and criticism, and practicing being transparent towards your supervisors.

Study load

In addition to the scheduled sessions, you should take into account an extra study load of approximately half an hour in between sessions. To prepare for the sessions you will fill out worksheets like core quality quadrants, reading documents about dealing with feedback and criticism at work, and 3-minute mindful meditation exercises.
