On Thursday March 25 2021, Dr Brenda Oude Breuil (Criminology) and Dr Linda Duits (Media and Performance Studies) will discuss their research projects on respectively the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine on sex work(ers) and the role of the media on upholding the stigma around sex work(ers) and its effects on policy making.

This Brown Bag Lunch Conversation centers around the enduring stigma around and stereotypical representations of sex work and sex workers in the Netherlands. This structural stigma has led to a status aparte of sex workers in socio-economic contexts regarding for example access to labor rights and possibilities to make use of common financial services and claims to social services. Consequently, sex workers have less of a social and financial safety-net at their disposal. Therefore, the COVID-19 crisis and lockdown and their socio-economic consequences seem to have hit harder in this sector. This Brown Bag Lunch Conversation will on the one hand delve into these consequences and will on the other hand explore how representations of sex work/ers in the media contribute to the shaping and upholding of societal attitudes and stigmas around sex work, whilst stripping sex workers from their agency.
