Public Speaking
Target audience
If you feel you need to become better at presenting in general, you can follow this course at any moment during your PhD. If you (also) want to practise with presenting your PhD research, it’s best to take this course after or at the end of the literature phase.
Course description
Do you want to get better at presenting? Or is presenting something you rather avoid? This course will take you to your next level in presenting.
Presenting live, in front of a group or only one person, is the most effective way to get your message across, to connect to people, and to potentially harvest new knowledge or information. Yet, under pressure, we tend to become less focussed (or nervous even) and this hinders the benefits of a live presentation.
By teaching you to present with the audience, rather than in front of it, this course will get you to your next level in presenting.
We will have class discussions about several elements of live presenting, you will exercise in pairs, present in front of small groups, and present in front of the whole group.
I gave a presentation to a large and knowledgeable audience. For the first time, I used the 4th focus point and let my audience 'imagine' my research story. I got very positive feedback from the audience. It was just the beginning and will experience more in the future.
The whole experience was truly transformative for my entire approach to presentations and talks. I can't imagine gaining the same skills from any other medium than I did through your course.
