Linux & HPC Basics for Research (CL)

Important

For in person courses you need to bring your own laptop.

Target Audience

Anyone who would like to learn the basics of using the command line as the interface to operate a computer.

Course description

An operating system is a sophisticated suite of computer programs that enable users to interact with the software and hardware of a computer. Personal computers most commonly operate on Microsoft's Windows, but there are alternatives like Apple's macOS and free and open-source Unix-like operating systems. Linux is based on Unix and is very popular among bioinformaticians.

While the graphical interfaces of Linux systems are (often) intuitive, the text-based interface (called the command line) can be a bit daunting. However, once familiar with the command line, you will find it to be efficient and powerful. Note that you can access the command line from within the graphical interface, so you can use both on one screen! In this course you will learn the basics of using the command line as the interface to operate a computer.

I loved the practical and hands on approach.
