You will learn about the various ways to write a compelling title that conveys your main message at a glance. By creating clear headings, you’ll learn how to organize the narrative of your research. Get familiar with the 9 design principles to create professional designs, including hierarchy, contrast, direction, emphasis, colors, consistency, and white space.

You'll analyze examples of good and bad academic designs to understand the best practices and common pitfalls. Additionally, you'll learn how to select and use the best images and icons, explore various online tools and resources, and improve your data visualization skills to create better graphs and diagrams. Finally, you will know how to create inclusive designs and where to look for design inspiration.

* You will not learn how to use specific design software (although you might get some useful tips). You can work in any program you’re familiar with, such as PowerPoint, Canva, or Adobe Illustrator

This course consists of two live sessions with homework in between. In the first session, an interactive workshop you’ll you learn the best practices of infographic design. By doing writing exercises and analyzing academic designs, you’ll learn the best-practices and which tools and resources you can use. Between sessions you work on a first draft of your infographic, that you bring to the second session. This is a work session where you get personal feedback on your design by the trainer and your peers, and finalize the design while being able to ask questions and discuss your content.

Study load

In addition to the scheduled sessions, you should take into account an extra study load of approximately 6 hours in total. This study load generally consists of homework assignments in preparation for the next session.

This course is free for GSLS PhD candidates. However: free of charge does not mean free of responsibility. Once you have signed up for a course, we expect you to attend. For every late cancellation or no-show we have had to disappoint others who would have liked to attend. This is our policy:

• You may cancel free of charge up to 4 weeks before the start of the course. After this date you can only cancel if you have a GSLS PhD candidate to replace you in the course. Send the name and contact information of your replacement to pcc@uu.nl, at least 2 working days before the start of the course;
• We expect that you actively attend the full course, but at least 80%. It is mandatory to attend the first session. If you are absent the first session you cannot follow the remaining of the course;
• Not meeting the above requirements means you will be charged a no-show fee (€ 156). We will send the invoice after the course has ended. We are unable to make any exceptions, unless you have a valid reason (i.e., illness or death in the family 1^st/2^nd degree or partner). Your supervisor has to send an e-mail to pcc@uu.nl indicating the reason.
